And as a reminder, here’s the beast we started with:
Everything takes longer than expected. Everything. Part of it is the whole day job and working full-time thing, another is that you’re learning as you go and shit’s expensive, and lastly sometimes you’re just burnt out and want to go to happy hour and drink beer on a Saturday afternoon instead of spend another minute in your 25 square foot bathroom. So it took a while.
It was totally worth it though. We love the way it came out, the way it still feels charming and flows with the age of the house, but at the same rate feels fresh and modern.
For art work I wanted something simple that didn’t compete too much with the medicine cabinet. I used two free printables and framed them in simple $2 gallery frames. The printables were from here and here. I purposefully went with just the black and white art because I felt like there was a lot going on in the rest of the small space.
It was so hard to find a simple, not gaudy looking towel ring. There wasn’t enough space to fit a standard towel bar and I didn’t really want a bar. I bought and returned many because none of them fit the space. The one I landed on was perfect and the cheapest of all the options. I love that it’s clear and blends in more than anything.
We have this awesome built in that kind of serves as an extra medicine cabinet only it’s much larger. We kept it simple by painting it white and adding some mercury glass style knobs.
The total cost breakdown looked like this:
Flooring: $185
Paint: $25
Fixtures (toilet, sink, faucet & parts needed): $200 (remember, we got our toilet & sink at the Habitat Restore)
Tub Grouting: $80
Medicine Cabinet Update: $1
Accessories: $154

- soap dispenser: $10
- towel ring: $5
- rug: $12
- art: $4
- overhead light: $70
TOTAL: $645ish, plus the $300 I mention below.
Though we did sell the toilet and the sink and made a total of $45, so that puts us around $600.
So we were doing pretty well on costs, until there was a leak in the tub that we could not get under control. In a weak moment we called in a plumber. It took him 20 minutes to fix and cost us $300. Ooof, that was a punch in the gut. We had to just suck it up and move on though. It was a pretty bad leak and honestly, we just got our water bill for the last three months and we wasted (makes me sick!) SO much water from that leak.
I’m glad we got it fixed and didn’t delay any longer because I was shocked how much water was actually leaking. It ended up needing a new cartridge in the control device thingy (technical term) that turns the water on and off in the tub.
It’s so lovely to use a bathroom that doesn’t gross you out to walk on the floor and a toilet that’s adult size! As of now it’s my favorite room in the house…probably because it’s the only room that’s complete.
