Baby shower count: 2. I’ve been to only two baby showers but I’ve seen hundreds of super cute ideas for showers online, in magazines, etc. I decided for this one I was going to attempt to create a diaper cake. We’ve all seen them and they go for hundreds of dollars custom made (which is a bit ridiculous). It was my first one so it wasn’t perfect and I only had the diapers and my house to work with. I started this project too late at night to pick up more supplies somewhere and I needed it for the next morning. So, I got to work.
I used a pack of 36 newborn diapers and my cake came out a bit smaller than a lot out there but it was appropriate for the size of the shower. I rolled each one, starting the roll at the opening of the diaper and wrapped a rubber band around three rolls at a time it.
Once I had them all rolled I started to make the layers. I stood them up on the cake plate and placed them around the edge of the plate. Then filled the layer with more rolls of diapers.
I tied a ribbon around the whole layer to keep them together. I then repeated that whole babble of directions above for the second layer, just with fewer diapers. The top layer was just three diapers in a pyramid…though I did wish I had one left to make it a group of four. Once all the ribbons were tied, I double and tripled up the ribbons to add some more colors.
I was supposed to put a wooden dowel through it to hold it together. But, at 11 o’clock at night I didn’t have one. I did have Bic pens though so I used those instead. It held the whole thing together perfectly.
The last thing I did to give it an added touch was took a piece of blue tissue paper and slipped it through our paper shredder for some instant blue confetti like stuff. It was definitely what the diaper cake needed to complete it.
This one certainly wasn’t perfect, but wasn’t bad for my first!

Diaper cakes are so charming. You did a great job. I have made several diaper cakes over the years. When I made my first one they were actually made with cloth diapers! I usually take baby socks and make them into rosebuds, I also take a baby bottle and put it in the center, like a candle.
