I had big intentions of making loads of fabric gift bags and gift wrap this year to use for holiday gifts. But after a crazy fall of work travel, being super pregnant and Al having surgery it just didn’t happen. So instead I decided to take another eco-friendly, lower waste route.
We’re making small shifts daily to live a lower waste/zero waste lifestyle for a number of reasons. More on that later, but holiday gift wrap irritates me to the max. Most of it is not recyclable, it has plastics in it and will never break down. Sure, it’s pretty, but there are a lot of other ways to wrap gifts in a pretty way.
We have a ton of fabric gift bags that we use for gifts to each other but for gifts for others this year I decided on recycled brown paper and paper raffia for bows. You can also use twine, as that’s eco-friendly. The wrap and ribbon are 100% recyclable and bio-degradable and I even went so far as writing a note on gifts that said “please recycle,” because everyone can use the reminder. You can even tie a sprig from your Christmas tree or a pine cone to add more dimension and detail if that’s your jam.
Please, if you do one thing this year, ditch the crappy plastic wraps, the glitter, the unnecessary gift toppers that all end up in a landfill forever.

Lastly, you can even use a practical, reusable shopping bag and tie it up cute with a gift in it. Those shopping bags are my absolute favorite reusable bags. I have one that’s 10+ years old and still looks brand new!
