handmade holidays: custom beverage coasters

December 13, 2013 by Lindsey 2 Comments

It’s our last day of the Handmade Holidays series! If you missed any of the last eight days you can check them all out here.

You can really make these coasters with whatever paper you’d like. I used the box from a pack of beer. If you do use a beer box ensure it’s one of the thinner cardboard boxes.  You could also use scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, etc.diy beverage coasters

You’ll need:

  • Beer box – or any paper of choice
  • 4 Ceramic tiles
  • Felt
  • Mod Podge

Cut four squares out of the beer box. Ensure that each square is a tad smaller than the tile.

Wipe the tiles down with some cleaner and a paper towel to make sure there’s no dirt or dust on them. Lightly paint a coat of mod podge onto the tile and also onto the back of the cardboard square. Center the cardboard onto the tile and firmly press down, paying special attention to the corners and ensuring they’re glued down. I stacked a few books on top of mine to make sure they were sticking.

Paint another thin coat of mod podge over the top of the tile to secure the cardboard. Let dry completely and add another coat of mod podge to seal the entire coaster. They’ll work fine if your beverages aren’t too sweaty, but you’ll likely want to spray them with a clear sealant that will protect them from liquid. You can find sealant at a craft store – usually locked up with the spray paints.

Finally, cut a piece of felt to the size of the tile and hot glue or super glue on to the bottom of the tile to protect the surface.

Wrap with a bow and gift with a beverage of choice or with a bar set or set of glasses or whatever you’d like!

These make such nice gifts. I have made them using napkins. There are so many printed napkins that the choices are endless. Great Job.
