nightstand turned play kitchen

November 30, 2010 by Lindsey 3 Comments

Recently I got my hands on an unfinished nightstand that was the perfect size to re-purpose into a play kitchen. Al used some scrap pieces of wood to build the back of the kitchen and then primed and painted the whole thing. He removed the drawer from the stand and pried off the front piece. He then attached hinges to it so that it would open and close like an oven door. I added a handle and hooks to hang utensils from and a small wooden shelf I found at Savers.

Using some drawer pulls and an upside down wooden “J” we made the sink faucet. The sink was a small bowl also found at Savers that I velcroed down so that it could easily be removed but would also stay in place. We finished it off with some wooden disks that I painted burners onto, knobs for the burner controls and a curtain for the bottom where play kitchen toys can be stored away.

I was totally psyched with the end results. This was not an easy project. We ran into a lot of conundrums and had to think outside the box quite a bit. In the end we were both glad it came out the way envisioned. I’m hoping to make another in the future, once I can find the perfect nightstand again!

The only thing I have to say is that you are amazing. I wish I could come up with the stuff that you think of! Good work!

Thanks girls! My brain just never stops, I see something and I instantly re-create it in my head. Then I make it happen in real life!
