This happened so long ago but sometimes it just takes three months to write about the simplest things. On Halloween (read: super creepy) we lost power around 6:30pm or so. The whole building was pitch black. We never actually found out what happened as our building was the only one on the street that was out.
Being the organized person I am you’d think I would have the candles and flashlights and matches ready to go. Well, no. I couldn’t find a damn flashlight for the life of me and we only had one tiny candle at the time that was really barely burning anymore because it was all used up.
After using my phone for light I eventually found the flashlights, but at that point we’d been without power for close to 30 minutes. So I decided the next day that we needed a small power outage kit. Nothing huge. No stockpile of a hundred canned goods. Nothing for a disaster, but just an easy to grab kit with the necessities for a few hours without electricity.
I added a bunch of tea light candles (after the chaos of not finding the flashlights or candles I found a massive pack of tea light candles), two wind-up flashlights, so we don’t have to worry about batteries, and a few matchbooks. All the supplies fit great in an old take out container. It fit perfectly in our main closets door organizer so I now see it every time I open that closet door.
It’s not rocket science, that’s for sure. But every time we’ve lived somewhere and the power goes out I have to scan my brain hard to locate just one flashlight. This is easy to remember and to grab with everything in one place.
Do you guys have any tips for storing (and remembering!) where flashlights are? Maybe I just don’t use flashlights on a regular basis like some people?
