cane chair makeover: phase 1

October 11, 2011 by Lindsey 2 Comments

Sunday night I was watching a Candice Olson show on HGTV. She took some old cane armchairs and gave them the most amazing makeover with some paint and new fabric. I loved it the transformation and started thinking about how I would make it over if I had one.

Yesterday, I popped into the thrift store and right in front of me, literally it was right next to the door to the store, was the exact style cane chair that Candice had just transformed. I was in heaven. And then I saw the price tag.

IT WAS $9.99!!!!!! I thought for sure it was going to be $20 or higher (which I wouldn’t have paid). The best part, I OBVIOUSLY had a coupon! So I got the chair for $6.99 +tax. When I got home I got right to work on it. I know it’ll take me a few days to complete the whole thing.

I pulled apart the entire chair down to it’s bones. It’s in the most amazing condition. I don’t have to replace any of the springs, foam or batting. It’s not even discolored or anything. I pulled out about 1 trillion staples, and I didn’t even get them all. Some are too deep into the wood so I had to tear the fabric away from it. I also found a bobby pin, a few tags from the original fabric and a disgusting amount of cat hair. Which, to someone who despises cats, was like finding an actual cat. Gross.

When I was done, after about two hours of working on it, I was left with a bunch of pieces. I’m saving the fabric pieces and pipping to use them to measure the new fabric out.

Now the question is: what color to paint it and what type of fabric do I want? I’m thinking of keeping it neutral, maybe a light gray color and choosing a fabric with some pops of color. I’m going to shop around for some fabric before choosing a paint color. I have a coupon for a free pint of paint too so hopefully I’ll get away with just paying for the chair and fabric! Do you have any thoughts for color or patterns? I’m still unsure where I’m going to put the chair. Either living room or office. We’ll see!

Hey, I think your blog might be having browser
compatibility issues. When I look at your website in
Ie, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer,
it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick
heads up! Other then that, fantastic blog!

Thanks for the head’s up, I’ll look into it! I’m not having issues viewing it in any browser but I’m going to look into whether it’s certain versions of the different browsers. Thanks again!
