embellished pumpkins and halloween mummy jars

Over the weekend I worked on a few, extremely simple, Halloween decorations. I like to add some simple touches to celebrate the spooky spirit around the house. Nothing too over the top. I’ve been crossing my fingers that we have some trick or treaters this year. I hope we’ll at least have a few!

This first one I saw in a magazine, though I can’t remember which one it was.

I picked up three mini pumpkins at a local farm stand. I think they were $1.99 a pound and my total was somewhere around $4.50.

Using some sewing pins that I already had, I got to work. You could really write whatever you’d like as long as you had enough pins and pumpkins. I settled on “boo” because it was simple.

It didn’t come out perfect the first time. Some were not lined up, etc. But I poked all the pins in then took a step back to see where some adjustments needed to be made.

The pumpkins are on the windowsill near our kitchen table which I love because the table is too small to have any sort of Halloween centerpiece or display. On Halloween night I’ll put them out on the front steps or on the windowsill that you can see from the steps.

I also made these adorable little mummy jars that I found a picture of on Pinterest. I picked up some googly eyes (that were on sale and I had a coupon so they were super cheap!) and used some jars that I had around the house. I had a scrap piece of linen fabric and a scrap piece of plain white cotton fabric. I chose to go with the linen because it had more of a texture that I liked. I cut a small slit in the fabric and then tore strips to give some imperfect edges.

I repeated this until I had enough strips. I wrapped the fabric around the jars, in no order, and secured it with tape in the back.

I then hot glued the googly eyes on and had my complete mummy jar. Kind of silly, but they make me laugh every time I look at them!

Well, almost complete. I have to pick up some of those tealight candles to put inside. You know, the ones that are fake, but lights up the same way a regular candle does. I figure that’s the safest option with the fabric and all. You could also easily make this with gauze, that you’d find at a pharmacy. I just had extra fabric so I went that route.

What are you guys doing to get in the Halloween spirit? Any simple touches? Projects? Crafts? I’m hoping to have a few more but I haven’t decided quite yet!
