Update from reader comment! The yarn must not be wool! Which I knew but forgot to mention!
Since we’ve rounded the corner to fall I’m gearing up to start knitting again. The holidays will be here in no time so I’m exploring different patterns for DIY gifts.
Last spring on a trip back to MA my aunt and grandma gave me a ton of yarn to use for my new knitting obsession hobby that started last winter. Since it had been sitting in a box in a closet for quite some time I wanted to give all the yarn a wash to refresh it and fluff it up a tad.
It was a quite simple process with great results. I bought two laundry bags for a few bucks each at Target. I stuffed each one with rolls of yarn – though try not to over-stuff the bags.
I tossed them in the wash on a quick cycle with a small amount of soap. Now here’s the one thing to remember. ZIPPER THE LAUNDRY BAG. Yes, seems simple enough, right? Well I apparently forgot to zipper one of the bags and this happened:
For some reason I thought it was the funniest thing in the world. I think I laughed for an hour. Like hard-core belly laughing. I was able to salvage much of that knot, but it took a while for me to untangle and re-roll it. Once the wash is through go ahead and toss the entire bag in the dryer. Dry on low heat for about 40 minutes. When it’s complete you’ll have fresh, fluffy yarn ready to create with.
Oh and if the un-zippered bag situation does happen to you, just go ahead and make a yarn wig out of it.
Great hat! A word of caution though – make sure the yarn isn’t WOOL!!! Washing is fine for acrylics only!
