no sew window cornice

February 3, 2014 by Lindsey Leave a Comment

When you live smack in the middle of a city it’s bright and loud and bright all night long.

And when you’re the worlds lightest sleeper like I am that becomes a problem. If you follow me on Instagram you would know that for a while this was our solution:

beach towel

While somewhat effective, it wasn’t very pretty. And it fell down constantly.  So for twenty bucks we grabbed this black out roller shade at Ikea. I question quality of some products from Ikea, but at twenty dollars I figured it wasn’t breaking the bank if it didn’t work out.

Al hung it up and it covered the window perfectly. It rolls pretty well. It does get stuck sometimes and needs to be guided, but I truly think that we just need to loosen the bracket, it seems like it’s so tight that it restricts the roller from actually rolling.

cardboard

Once it was hung I felt like it needed something pretty to cover the roller part. Using this method from one of our old rentals I created a cornice. The fabric was a bed sheet I found at a thrift store.

I  washed it and then wrapped the cardboard in it. I really like the way it looks and I love the soft pattern of the fabric. It has just the shades of blues and greens that I want to pull into our bedroom.

When you live in such a small space I feel like softer colors make it seem brighter.

Still need to get some artwork for above the bed, re-paint that mirror  and get that chest of drawers painted. Almost there….a year later!
