one mini coffee table

October 21, 2011 by Lindsey 2 Comments

Back in July I shared our Brimfield Antique Fair finds where we bought a small table that we thought we could use as a coffee table. I use the phrase coffee table loosely, because we actually leave it pushed against the living room wall and pull it into the space when needed.

We weren’t sure what to do with it at first because it has a laminate top, wood around the edge and wood legs. We decided to try spray painting just the wood and leave the top. I had a feeling that it might look alright of we could just change that terrible yellow color. And although I don’t love the laminate, it gives it a nice touch to have a different pattern and texture.

Using some newspaper we covered the top part and secured it with blue painters tape. I made sure there were no flaps in the newspaper because I didn’t want the paint to get underneath it.

We chose to use the Pimento color that I had used when I painted my cork board frame. We gave it a rough sanding and then Al gave it three even coats, allowing ample time to dry between coats.

We were pleasantly surprised with the outcome. The paint covered really, really well and we loved the look of the laminate top with the new color of the bottom. It definitely wouldn’t be something everyone likes but it works for us. I think what I’m drawn to is the coloring of the top mixed with the coloring of the bottom.

It looks so much fresher with the new coat of paint! What do you guys think? Like the color, hate the laminate? Love both? Hate it all?!

It looks great. The laminate will make it easy to set the beer bottles and wine glasses on and not worry about rings! Good job.

That’s soooo true! I didn’t even think of that. It’s especially fabulous because I can’t stand using coasters!
