our guest room progress

January 15, 2015 by Lindsey Leave a Comment

Last week we got started on the guest room and I think I jumped up and down clapping my hands when we actually got moving. So much of what we’ve done in the house so far has been necessary things, not pretty things (think insulation, electricians, plumbers, etc.). Though, we did remove the carpet in the whole house already which made a huge difference. (Photo below from the original listing. That’s not quite my style).

Guest Room Before

This guest room is the smallest room in the house with the largest closet. The closet is a cedar closet, with built-in drawers, but it no longer smells lovely like cedar and instead smells musty. So we chose to paint it. I feel like we might get some backlash on that, but it takes away the musty smell, and makes the room look so much bigger, brighter, cleaner and happier.

Tiny peek of it below. We started there because that was kind of a beast. And to be honest, the paint and primer in one didn’t cover too well so we’ll likely need to do another 1-2 coats (after 3 already, oof.). Still a lot to do there to get it to a reasonable state.Guest Room Closet Progress

Next up we painted the very yellowed ceiling. This is the only room with a tiled ceiling like that. We thought about removing it but sometimes, in a 70-year-old house, it’s just easier to paint and never know what’s behind something. Down the line we may replace it but not anytime in the short-term. Look at the color difference from before the crisp white paint!

You’ll also notice in the before photo that we have some lovely wallpapered paneling in this room. We’ve picked out a light gray paint and plan to paint right over the paneling. More on that next week and our review of how it turns out.

On the list for this weekend is finish painting, add the floor moulding, replace the light fixture, DIY an intake vent and start to put the room back together. I’ll have a source list, including paint colors, in the completed post (hopefully) next week!
