I’m not a huge baker. I’ll bake if needed but it’s not something I overly enjoy doing like some people. I’d much prefer to cook. However, I do like to whip up some quick treats every now and again. This one is so simple, but adds a festive touch to a normally plain brownie.
I made this even more simple by using a box of gluten-free brownie mix. You can certainly make your brownies by scratch but in sticking with the stress free holiday theme, I’m taking the short cuts when available! You can whip these up while your guests are on their way over, that’s how easy they are.
I started with my boxed brownie mix and baked according to the instructions on the box. While they were baking I put a handful of mini candy canes in a ziploc bag and started breaking them apart. I think I used a can opener because it was within an arms reach. Though, you can really use whatever is close by to gently break apart the candy canes. Don’t crush them into powder, but instead just gently crush them until you have a bag full of candy cane pieces.
When there’s about 2-3 minutes left in the baking cycle pull the brownie pan out and sprinkle the candy canes over the top. Pop the pan back in the oven for the remaining 2-3 minutes, just enough to melt the candy canes a tad to get them to stick to the top of the brownies.
Let cool, cut and enjoy! It’s the easiest way to jazz up a dessert without a ton of hassle. That’s my type of baking.
